Canada 4c

1858 Three pence red on soft horizontally ribbed paper, Imperforate, an extraordinary mint pair of this difficult printing, from Pane A - Positions 10 & 20, sheet margin at right showing start of plate imprint and superb margins on other sides. Dazzling colour and sharp impression, showing prominent horizontal ribbed effect, possessing unusually FULL ORIGINAL GUM, a very rare trait for this particular printing. The upper stamp is flawless and in OUTSTANDING QUALITY, the lower stamp although has light crease. Shows only a faint trace of hinging - VERY LIGHTLY HINGED. A great rarity and BY FAR THE FINEST of just three known pairs (the only mint multiples that exist). A glorious showpiece of Canadian Pence Issues, Extremely Fine, Original Gum / Very Lightly Hinged (Unitrade 4c; catalogue value $24,000+)

Expertization: 2019 Greene Foundation certificate

Provenance: Charles Lathrop Pack, Harmer, Rooke & Co., Part One, December 1944; Lot 41
Amos Eno, Siegel, March 1959; Lot 30 - described as completely sound and "...
Extremely Fine, a Gem of Greatest Rarity."

Literature: Illustrated in Winthrop Boggs "The Postage Stamps and Postal History of Canada"   handbook on page 142

It is interesting to observe that this pair, featured in the famous 1944 Pack sale, was listed with a catalogue value of $300 and realized a whopping $1,000 hammer. By comparison a mint pair of the 12p black (cat. $7,000) realized $7,500.
AN INCOMPARABLE MINT PAIR ON SOFT HORIZONTALLY RIBBED PAPER IDEAL FOR A WORLD-CLASS COLLECTION AND AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT SURVIVING MINT MULTIPLES RELATING TO THE THREE PENCE BEAVER.
